Brett Kavanaugh accuser Christine Blasey Ford’s allegations about how he sexually assaulted her more than 35 years ago never really did hold up to scrutiny, mostly because she said she couldn’t recall key details like where it happened, when it happened, and how she got to and from the event.
What’s more, four witnesses she claimed were there at the time have said, under penalty of perjury, that they weren’t and had no idea what Ford was talking about.
Now we learn that she may even have lied during her sworn testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week when she told the panel her side of the story.
As The Daily Wire reported, a letter released this week by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, claims that a former boyfriend of Ford’s says he personally saw her coaching someone about how to take and pass a lie detector test even though under oath. Last week, she stated emphatically that she had “never” done so.
“The full details of Dr. Ford’s polygraph are particularly important because the Senate Judiciary Committee has received a sworn statement from a longtime boyfriend of Dr. Ford’s, stating that he personally witnesses Dr. Ford coaching a friend on polygraph examinations,” Grassley’s letter says.
The ex-boyfriend said in his letter to the committee that Ford coached Monica L. McLean on how to get through a polygraph test. He said Ford “explained in detail what to expect” during the exam and how to make yourself “less nervous” about it.
“During some of the time we were dating, Dr. Ford lived with Monica L. McLean, who I understood to be her life-long best friend,” he wrote in the letter. “During that time, it was my understanding that McLean was interviewing for jobs with the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office.”
“I witnessed Dr. Ford help McLean prepare for a potential polygraph exam,” the ex-boyfriend wrote. “Dr. Ford explained in detail what to expect, how polygraphs worked and helped McLean become familiar and less nervous about the exam.”
Two things are noteworthy here. (Related: Kavanaugh accuser Julie Swetnick should be criminally prosecuted for attempting to falsely frame an innocent man, suggests Dershowitz.)
One, Ford testified that she took a polygraph herself as a way to ‘validate’ her accusations. She claimed that she was “nervous” during the test, a fact corroborated by CBS News in a Sept. 26 report. She also claimed she didn’t know if she was being recorded via audio and video, though as you can see in the CBS News story, she was sitting near a device that had a camera.
Two, McLean has emerged as a controversial figure. On Friday, as The National Sentinel noted, McLean appears to be someone who attempted to get another Ford friend, Leland Keyser, to change her story about not remembering anything at all about being around when Kavanaugh allegedly assaulted her.
The Wall Street Journal reported further, quoting unnamed sources:
Leland Keyser, who Dr. Ford has said was present at the gathering where she was allegedly assaulted in the 1980s, told investigators that Monica McLean, a retired Federal Bureau of Investigation agent and a friend of Dr. Ford’s, had urged her to clarify her statement, the people said.
That’s a polite way of saying “change her statement,” as in suborning perjury. As in, witness tampering (because if that’s not, then nothing is).
The WSJ also noted that Keyser has informed FBI officials that she felt “pressured’ by allies of Ford to “revisit her initial statement that she knew nothing about an alleged sexual assault” by Kavanaugh as a teenager.
McLean’s lawyer, David Laufman, denied that his client did anything of the sort in a statement to the paper. But that begs the question: If McLean’s innocent, why has she lawyered up?
There are more holes in Ford’s story (and those of her friends) and Kavanaugh’s got witnesses backing up his side of the story. And he’s got a lot of them.
