Though we should never be too quick to latch on to any politician’s boisterous rhetoric, Donald Trump‘s statement regarding the U.S. unemployment rate being 40%, rather than the often quoted 5.1%, was actually correct — and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics confirms it!
This view can be supported by the actual statistics when you use the broadest definition of unemployment, together with the ratio of people over the age of 16 with jobs to the overall 16-and-over population. Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again”, is heavily based on the variables surrounding this statistic, and refers to his hope of returning America to its post-war glory days. But in fair contrast, this was of course a time when the U.S. dollar wasn’t yet heavily devalued through reckless money printing, wealth-fare recipients didn’t make up a third of the U.S. population and one income was enough to support a whole household.
